Repair of Nasal Septal perforation with Autologous Auricular Cartilage in Rabbits

Abstract
|

|
This was designed to evaluate the feasibility of auricular cartilage implantation for the treatment of nasal septal perforation. A perforation was made in the nasal septal cartilage in 5 rabbits and auricular cartilage with intact perichondrium
on
either side was implanted to the perforated septum. The implanted tissue was taken 4 weeks later. And examined grossly and histologically. The implanted site was completely epithelialized. and scar formation was minimal. The implanted cartilage
was
completely lined by ciliated columnar epithelium. Proliferation of the implanted cartilage and scattered ossification were observed, which indicated the proliferating potential of chondrocytes of the implanted perichondrium. The results of this
study
suggest that auricular cartilage implantation may be one of acceptable surgical procedures for the repair of nasal septal perforation.
